Complete Guide To Jet Boats

What Is A Jet Boat?

Simply put a jet boat is just like any other boat out there. The primary and most significant difference is the propulsion system. Instead of being pushed by a propeller on the outdrive, it is pushed by an enclosed impeller that forces water through a swivel nozzle.

They have evolved a lot since they were invented in the 1950s. Today we have jet boats on almost all sizes from 15ft to 27ft, and even jet powered center console boats.

There are a lot of advantages when it comes to jet boats. And if you are in the market for a new boat, you definitely should not ignore jet boats.

How Does A Jet Boat Work?

It soaks water in through the water intake located at the bottom of the boat. The engine powers the impeller witch is basically a propeller enclosed in a tube. The impeller spinning at very high rpm pushes the water out a movable nozzle called jet pump. The jet pump is connected to the steering wheel through cables, giving you the ability to steer left and right.

The reverse is almost too simple; when you put it in reverse, there is a bucket that covers the jet pump, redirecting water to the front of the boat.

When in neutral position this bucket in front of the jet pump sits halfway, sending some water to the front and some to the back of the boat allowing the boat to sit still.

How Fast Can Jet Boats Go?

There is no doubt that jet boats can be fast boats. A lot of them are equipped with supercharged engines producing 250 HP on single engines and 500 HP with twin engines on bigger boats. If you have a passion for speed, a jet boat might be right for you.

In a lot of cases, up to 50% more fuel consumption. This beast boats spotting twin supercharged engines producing impressive 500 HP are definitely thirsty for fuel.
