Not automatically. An on-water towing benefit does not establish what happens to your boat trailer on the road. Look for an explicit trailer-roadside benefit in your membership or insurance documents, then check whether it assists the trailer, the tow vehicle, or both. Before buying an add-on, check what you already have.
U.S. recreational-boating comparison. Prices and public documents checked October 25, 2026. This is a guide to questions and published terms, not a determination of your coverage.
Start with the job you need paid for
A failed wheel bearing, a collision-damaged trailer and a boat stranded on a lake create different bills. Keep these four questions separate:
- On-water assistance: Who gets the disabled boat to a suitable landing?
- Roadside assistance: Who services or transports the disabled trailer or tow vehicle?
- Physical damage: Who pays to repair or replace your damaged property?
- Liability: Who responds to injuries or damage you cause to someone else?
A roadside-service membership does not replace damage or liability insurance. Progressive’s trailer-insurance explanation illustrates why those protections need separate checks; your actual policies and applicable terms decide the answer.
Check your boat policy before adding another membership
Progressive’s public towing page says roadside assistance is included when the trailer is listed on the policy, including transport to the closest repair facility if the trailer or tow vehicle is disabled. Its Sign & Glide on-water benefit is a separate subject.
GEICO’s September 16, 2026 explainer likewise ties roadside assistance to purchasing boat-trailer insurance. These are insurer explanations, not your declarations page or an endorsement confirming a particular loss.
Find the trailer entry in your policy schedule. Then ask the insurer to identify the roadside provision, destination rule, payment limit and claim procedure that apply to it. Check your auto policy and motor-club handbook too. A familiar company name on a card is not enough to settle those details.
BoatUS and Sea Tow: compare the road add-ons
The prices below are annual add-on prices for existing members, not the total cost of joining. Eligibility, equipment, destination and exclusions still apply.
| Road product | Annual add-on | Published road benefit |
|---|---|---|
| BoatUS TRAILER ASSIST | $15/year | Eligible tow vehicle and/or trailer: nearest repair facility or safe location within 100 miles. See the $500 fallback below. |
| Sea Tow Trailer Care | $16/year | Up to $300 per incident for eligible services. |
| Sea Tow Trailer Care+ | $30/year | Up to $600 per incident for eligible services. |
Price sources: BoatUS membership plans and Sea Tow Trailer Care. Benefit details: BoatUS road agreement and Sea Tow Trailer Care agreement.
Sea Tow’s trailer tow goes to the nearest repair facility or safe location, subject to member instructions.
BoatUS Basic is different: its agreement lists up to $50 of paid services, without specifying a per-incident or annual basis.
What would a new membership cost?
Add the base membership to the road option. Using the advertised annual prices, the arithmetic is:
- BoatUS: Basic $25 + $15 = $40; Freshwater $130 + $15 = $145; Saltwater $215 + $15 = $230.
- Sea Tow Gold: $249 + $16 = $265, or $249 + $30 = $279 with Trailer Care+.
- Sea Tow Lake: $169 + $16 = $185, or $169 + $30 = $199 with Trailer Care+.
These are published-price sums, not checkout quotes or verified all-in totals; taxes or transaction-specific charges were not established. The bundles also buy different on-water benefits, so the smallest total does not identify the best plan for your boating.
BoatUS Freshwater is unavailable in Florida or Hawaii. Sea Tow Lake is for eligible inland freshwater use outside Florida. Choose the water plan for your actual boating area, not just its price; neither water-plan description settles road territory. Sources: BoatUS and Sea Tow membership options.
The question that exposes the biggest gap: what if the truck fails?
Imagine the trailer is roadworthy, but the truck’s engine fails. You now need answers for two separate units. A service that moves the trailer has not necessarily agreed to move the truck, and a truck tow has not necessarily solved what happens to the boat.
BoatUS’s road agreement expressly addresses either disabled unit. However, it excludes payment for more than one service vehicle and has size/regulatory restrictions. Rented/borrowed units are excluded. Confirm the loaded-rig equipment plan.
Sea Tow lists tow-vehicle tire help, jump-starts, lockouts and fuel delivery. Its agreement allows discretionary towing if a jump-start cannot safely be performed; that is not a blanket truck-engine-failure towing benefit. Ask specifically about transporting each unit. Read the Trailer Care service privileges.
A mileage limit and a dollar cap behave differently
BoatUS: following unsuccessful dispatch or a Mexico breakdown, the road agreement permits up to $500 reimbursement for eligible towing to the nearest repair facility or safe location within 100 miles. A tow over 100 miles also has a $500 maximum payment. A hypothetical 120-mile tow is therefore not simply “the first 100 paid, then you pay 20.”
Sea Tow illustration: suppose one otherwise fully eligible roadside incident costs $850. This is a made-up bill, not a local towing quote. Applying the advertised caps gives:
- Trailer Care: $850 − $300 = $550 above the cap.
- Trailer Care+: $850 − $600 = $250 above the cap.
The calculation assumes the entire $850 qualifies, the full applicable cap remains available for this incident and that benefit is paid. Excluded charges or ineligibility would increase your responsibility. A dollar allowance cannot be converted into a promised number of towing miles without an actual service price.
Other situations worth checking before the trip
An empty trailer, or one left in the driveway
BoatUS’s FAQ allows an empty trailer while collecting the boat or returning after dropping it off. That does not establish eligibility for an unrelated transport job.
A stored trailer is a different case. BoatUS excludes towing from home/storage, with a home trailer-tire exception after 30 days.
Sea Tow’s road assistance applies away from normal storage.
An empty trailer and an unhitched trailer are different situations. If you disconnected the trailer after a breakdown, describe that sequence and ask how the benefit applies.
A flat tire with no usable spare
BoatUS may try to arrange tire delivery or, if that cannot be arranged, transport to a repair facility or safe location. BoatUS trailer FAQ.
Do not assume the tire or its delivery is paid: the road agreement excludes parts and parts delivery.
Sea Tow’s roadside FAQ excludes parts, tires and fuel from payment. Ask which labor and transport charges qualify, and who pays for the tire itself. Sea Tow roadside FAQ.
A collision or a difficult recovery
BoatUS may arrange help after a highway accident, but its FAQ says TRAILER ASSIST does not pay for that service. A provider’s ability to do the job is separate from who pays. BoatUS accident FAQ.
Sea Tow’s trailer benefit concerns owned/registered trailers disabled mechanically while hauled, not an established crash-recovery entitlement. Access restrictions can prevent service. Trailer Care definitions and limitations.
Buying assistance after the problem starts
BoatUS’s road agreement starts benefits at 11:59 p.m. on purchase day and excludes pre-existing conditions.
Sea Tow starts Trailer Care 24 hours after full payment and excludes known pre-existing problems. Waiting out activation does not cure an existing failure. Related events remain one incident until resolved; one act of service applies per incident.
Use this decision path before you spend money
- Immediate danger? Contact emergency services first. A membership comparison is not an emergency-response plan.
- Roadside breakdown, on-water problem or accident damage? Find the document for that specific job.
- Trailer, truck or both need transport? Write down each unit and ask for an answer for each.
- Already have an applicable benefit? Check the policy schedule and road-assistance terms before buying another product.
- A gap remains? Compare the route, trailer ownership, destination, service equipment, dollar/mileage limits and payment process. Request confirmation of unresolved cases before relying on the benefit.
The BoatUS road agreement names the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
The reviewed Sea Tow road documents did not establish a country list; an on-water service map is not a substitute. Confirm your road-trip territory in writing.
What to confirm when arranging service
Have your membership or policy details, trailer registration and rig information available. Give dispatch the facts, including whether the boat is aboard, whether a wheel or axle is damaged, and whether the truck can move. Then ask:
- Which unit or units will the provider transport, and what equipment will be sent?
- Which destination is approved? What changes if I request a different shop?
- What charges are mine: extra equipment, parts, tires, fuel, storage or later repairs?
- Will the provider bill the program directly, or must I pay and request reimbursement?
- If I arrange service myself, what authorization, provider qualifications, documents and filing deadline apply?
Sea Tow’s roadside FAQ allows a licensed, insured provider arranged by the member. It requires an itemized reimbursement bill within 60 days; keep proof of payment and the service details. Direct billing is available in most areas, not guaranteed everywhere. Check the road-specific reimbursement instructions.
Do not copy a reimbursement deadline or approval rule from an on-water agreement into a road claim. Save the applicable agreement and any written service confirmation with the paid invoice.
For the maintenance side, see the BoatLife365 guide to boat-trailer bearing service intervals. An assistance plan does not set your equipment’s maintenance schedule.
Source dates and limits of this comparison
BoatUS’s current agreement index still linked the road PDF marked 06/13 when checked. We retained that date rather than treating it as a newly issued contract. Confirm the applicable version before relying on it.
Sea Tow’s live agreement and its linked June 2024 PDF differ on renewal wording. This article does not give renewal or cancellation instructions; confirm the applicable terms directly. Live agreement; June 2024 PDF.
No individual policy, checkout quote, service dispatch or claim was tested. This comparison is based on public documents, not personal experience with either service. Availability and claim decisions require the applicable agreement and the facts of the incident.
Bottom line: verify a road benefit for your actual rig before buying another plan. The useful answer is not just “trailer assistance included.” It is which unit can be moved, where it can go, what the program will pay and what remains your responsibility.
